Hillary, Hiroshima and US Hubris

US policies and attitudes have shifted from nuclear deterrence with mass destruction and mutual suicide, to nuclear weapon use against any non-nuclear nation named as a US enemy. It's well documented in the Justin Raimondo article that follows. The named enemy is Iran and Bush has invented a number of lies, false accusations and suspicions to demonise Iran to the American people. Bush used the same 'big lie' technique prior to his unprovoked attack on Iraq in 2003. Then he had the alleged 9/11 'terrorist' attack and knowingly concocted lies linking Saddam Hussein to Bin Laden and this attack. Accusations were enough and worked for Bush in spite of mass demonstrations. Although there was lots of evidence these accusations were wrong, Bush's lies - effectively promoted and repeated by the mass media - were sufficient to get public and Congressional support.

The anniversary of the U.S. bombing of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is, perhaps, a good time to note that arguments rationalizing and even valorizing the use of nuclear weapons, once considered beyond the pale, are now back in fashion. Here we have yet more evidence of the Bizarro Effect , which, ever since 9/11, has stood everything – especially our traditional concept of morality – on its head, not only repealing the laws of logic and common sense but also ensconcing evil in the place of good.

This movement includes some very powerful, influential and wealthy people, who work hard to make their 'End Times' dreams come true. The most powerful man in the world, George Bush, is regarded as a hero by this group who see him as appointed by God to bring about the destiny they want. Will their madness prevail? Consider their dedication and the resources they pour into what they believe will bring on Armageddon. Compare that to your own dedication and the resources you and others put into rationality and peace. The various Fundamentalists may be mad but there is a growing body of such believers. Their dedicated madness and resources, linked to the power and nuclear madness of the Bush Administration, could prevail over the rational, but apathetic 'business-as-usual' majority.

Rapture Ready: The Unauthorized Christians United for Israel Tour

On July 16, I attended Christians United for Israel's annual Washington-Israel Summit. Founded by San Antonio-based megachurch pastor John Hagee, CUFI has added the grassroots muscle of the Christian right to the already potent Israel lobby. Hagee and his minions have forged close ties with the Bush White House and members of Congress from Sen. Joseph Lieberman to Sen. John McCain. In its call for a unilateral military attack on Iran and the expansion of Israeli territory, CUFI has found unwavering encouragement from traditional pro-Israel groups like AIPAC and elements of the Israeli government.

... Due to a 'false flag' incident in which nation One arranges a massive secret attack against nation Two, but it is made to look as if the attack came from   nation Three. The purpose is to supply the incentive and justification for nation two to make war on nation three. The entire exercise is presumed to benefit nation One - so long as their treachery is not discovered. A variation on this strategy is hinted at in many articles on a US-Israeli war on Iran.

The world's top military powers are gradually dismantling their stockpiles of nuclear arms, but all are developing new missiles and warheads with smaller yields that could increase the risk of atomic warfare, a Swedish research institute said Monday.
In its annual report on military forces around the globe, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute also said the rising number of nations with nuclear weapons is raising the risk such arms could be used.

James Bamford, author and long-time expert on the CIA says the recent CIA released "crown jewels" of CIA operations from 1950 into the 1970's, "seems so minor compared to what the CIA is doing today".

Among the many examples of how the CIA today makes the agency detailed in the "crown jewels" documents look pallid by comparison is the system of torture created by the Bush administration in the treatment of suspected terrorists. Along with the Iraq War, the CIA's "renditions" and "black sites" greatly add to what Julianne Smith of the Center for Strategic and International Studies calls "the rather dark shadow [cast] on our relationship with our European allies," and much of the rest of the world.

George Monbiot shows a scientific basis for expecting the worst consequences of global warming much sooner than expected, if we continue present trends with only token and fig leaf measures.
But he also indicates that there is a scientific basis for effective action if there is committed action by Governments and industry.
So what will happen?
It depends on aware individuals, and groups educating others, and committing themselves to campaign for the necessary measures and investments. If apathy, ignorance and short-term self interest continue to rule government decisions, humanity will go on to suffer irreversible disasters.

Reading a scientific paper on the train this weekend, I found, to my amazement, that my hands were shaking. This has never happened to me before, but nor have I ever read anything like it. Published by a team led by James Hansen at NASA, it suggests that the grim reports issued by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change could be absurdly optimistic.

'End Timers' Urge Bush -'Bring on God's Nuclear Doomsday' and Rapture to Heaven for the Faithful. Bush's 'End Times' supporters believe this would be the biblical Armageddon, as foretold in an obscure passage in the Bible. They believe Bush is God's chosen one, and are urging him to make it all happen. They believe it will result in a rapture of the chosen faithful few to heaven. Almost everything Bush has done in the Middle East, and not done, is consistent with these religious bunkum beliefs.

President George W. Bush has become dangerously steeped in ideas of Armageddon, the Apocalypse, an imminent war with Satanic forces in the Middle East, and an urgency to construct an American theocracy to fulfill God's end-of-days plan, according to close observers.
Historians and investigative journalists following the "end-time Christian" movement have grown alarmed at the impact it may be having on Bush's Middle East policies, including the current war in Iraq, the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian crisis, the strife in Lebanon and the administration's repeated attempts to find a cause for war against Iran.

The global nightmare that leads to the end of history is a visceral and disturbing expression of what believers feel about themselves and our world.  The horror of apocalyptic violence—the final aesthetic of the movement—at once terrifies and thrills followers.  It feeds dark fantasies of revenge and empowerment. 

.... My own observation is that the US mass media hardly ever mentions the danger of nuclear weapons anymore. The media are inferring that new US nuclear policies are perfectly normal and acceptable, so people seem to accept them. These are that the US can use nuclear weapons in conventional war situations and that the President may wage a pre-emptive nuclear war against any nation on any flimsy grounds he may supply.

Dr. Helen Caldicott has been advocating her own inconvenient truth for over a quarter-century, but her battle against nuclear power and nuclear weapons is still as controversial – and as necessary – as it has ever been. While Oscar-winning presumptive president Al Gore was still a congressman from Tennessee, and voting on what was then the largest military buildup in history, Caldicott was warning of the risks posed by both the nuclear arms race being orchestrated by the Reagan administration and the continued use of commercial nuclear power in communities around the United States.

The increasing loss of religious right believers in Bush's wars, such as the Mormons (below), is another indicator that Bush will likely resort to some extreme action - such as a sudden pre-emptive nuclear attack on Iran. If he fabricates and constructs any excuse, or false flag event and blames Iran, the US mass media will leap on the pro-war bandwagon, repeating his every lie or excuse without criticism.

Iraq is lost militarily and politically. Even the Mormons are now abandoning President George W. Bush's mad war. That's akin to the Swiss Guard deserting and leaving the pope to fend for himself with the Vatican under siege.

So many factors threaten human existence. .... One would think that such warnings from top people, who know from the inside, would result in remedial behaviour from rational human beings who wish to live and want their children and other human beings to continue to live on our planet. But it is not so.

According to a new report from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, some 100,000 asteroids and comets routinely pass between the Sun and the Earth's orbit. About 20,000 of these orbit close enough to us that they could one day hit the Earth and destroy a major city.
But the really worrying news from NASA is that over a thousand of these things are large enough (almost a mile wide in diameter) and their orbits close enough to us as to pose a real potential hazard of crashing into the Earth with enough force to end most life on this planet. Scientists think this is what killed off the dinosaurs about 65 million years ago.

Full-scale war on Iran may just be a concocted terrorist attack away from starting the "shock and awe."
The Samson Option is terminology used to explain Israel's intention to use its nuclear arsenal as an ultimate defense strategy if its leaders feel threatened enough to think they have no alternative. It comes from the biblical Samson said to have used his great strength to bring down the pillars of a Philistine temple, downing its roof and killing himself and thousands of Philistine tormentors. It's a strategy saying if you try killing me, we'll all die together, or put another way, we'll all go together when we go. Richard Wagner had his apocalyptic version in the last of his four operas of Der Ring des Nibelungen - Gotterdammerung, or Twilight of the Gods based on Norse mythology referring to a prophesied war of the Gods resulting in the end of the world.

Dr. James Luther Adams, my ethics professor at Harvard Divinity School, told his students that when we were his age -- he was then close to 80 -- we would all be fighting the "Christian fascists."
The warning, given 25 years ago, came at the moment Pat Robertson and other radio and television evangelists began speaking about a new political religion that would direct its efforts toward taking control of all institutions, including mainstream denominations and the government. Its stated goal was to use the United States to create a global Christian empire. This call for fundamentalists and evangelicals to take political power was a radical and ominous mutation of traditional Christianity. It was hard, at the time, to take such fantastic rhetoric seriously, especially given the buffoonish quality of those who expounded it.

A number of articles on our site under "Dangers of Fundamentalism" and many others available in various Google searches show the strong influence of "End Times" and other Fundamentalist beliefs on George Bush's policies toward the middle east, and Iran in particular. We know from many other sources that Bush is planning a nuclear war against Iran by April 2007, and that this may well escalate into a nuclear Armageddon, as prophesied in the Bible and desperately wanted by the Christian Zionists below. More rational people who do not want an Armageddon, only have a very limited time to use their freedoms to try and stop Bush.

As George W. Bush sets his sights on Iran, even Republicans are wondering how to constitutionally contain the trigger-happy king. But for an influential group of Christian fundamentalists -- White House allies that garner not only feel-good meetings with the President's liaisons to the "faith-based" community but also serious discussions with Bush's national security staff -- an attack on Iran is just what God ordered.

"After years of interrogation and abuse have established that few, if any, of the hundreds of Muslim detainees at Guantanamo Bay are the deadly terrorists they have been held out to be, why are we still holding them?"

Why is the United States poised to try Jose Padilla as a dangerous terrorist, long after it has become perfectly clear that he was just the wrong Muslim in the wrong airport on the wrong day?
Why is the United States still holding hundreds of detainees at Guantanamo Bay , long after years of interrogation and abuse have established that few, if any, of them are the deadly terrorists they have been held out to be?

A dedicated sometimes fanatical minority which has many wealthy and powerful adherents can dominate the more rational, but less focused majority. Fundamentalists often tithe and give large sums to further their fanatical beliefs This is demonstrated in the following article describing the rise of right-wing religionists in the military. Their major asset is George Bush who relies on their support and votes. Its a powerful combination and threat to American society. It is a cause of some of the irrational foreign policy decisions.  

The former New York Times Mideast Bureau chief warns that the radical Christian right is coming dangerously close to its goal of co-opting the country's military and law enforcement.
The drive by the Christian right to take control of military chaplaincies, which now sees radical Christians holding roughly 50 percent of chaplaincy appointments in the armed services and service academies, is part of a much larger effort to politicize the military and law enforcement. This effort signals the final and perhaps most deadly stage in the long campaign by the radical Christian right to dismantle America's open society and build a theocratic state. A successful politicization of the military would signal the end of our democracy.

While brilliant and very worthwhile, Marjorie Cohn also neglects to mention the techniques and circumstances the Bush regime may use to start a war with Iran with US public support.  
The result of this kind of failure by many US journalists is a people that will be fooled by a US 'False Flag' against Iran. They will then support a war on Iran because of what they have been fooled into thinking that Iran has done. It is a story of how rational intelligent thinking people can discount and/or dismiss the idea of official chicanery, even though various US Governments and their agencies have a long history of committing various nefarious schemes against other countries and governments.

In 1971, singer Marvin Gaye raised hackles when he tried to make sense of the madness of the Vietnam War by asking, "What's Going On?" ....
The song, told from the perspective of a returning Vietnam veteran, was inspired by Gaye's brother who had recently returned from that disastrous war.
...."The deaths of American soldiers now verges on the criminal."

When Generals and Congressmen promote the Faith at the Pentagon for TV it is usually a form of messianic Christianity - the kind that believes in 'End Times' soon, and a new crusade against the unbelievers. No risk is too great nor a new insanity that nutty, that they don't embrace it in their service to the primitive God of War that they fervently believe in.  
Unfortunately that is the message being conveyed to the Islamic world by George Bush and his actual illegal wars and brutal policies toward members of the Islamic faith, and the lies he uses to justify this new Crusade.

It's a delicate and controversial question. Where does freedom to practice religion inside Pentagon offices with high-ranking Defense Department officers, congressmen and other ranking federal officials stop?
Can Army generals in uniform gather with congressmen and federal agency officials to promote the Christian faith in uniform inside the Pentagon while being videotaped by a high-powered religious organization? Can the easily accessible tape, as well as military Christian web sites, be misconstrued by Islamic extremists during wartime?

This video game equates killing unbelievers with Christian morality and teachings. The game implies that it is virtuous, Christian, ethical and spiritual to vaporize in a puff of smoke anyone who does not share the destructive religious delusions of far right Fundamentalist Christians. Fundamentalists claim they are reaching out in a spirit of love to the unbelievers, so that unbelievers have a chance to convert to the one true faith, rather than be 'left behind' in the great rapture of true believers to Heaven.

Left Behind: Eternal Forces allows you to command the tribulation force, uncover the truth about worldwide disappearances, and save as many people as possible from the antichrist.

On a hunch I Googled "Bush religious delusions" and struck a gold mine of over a million articles. I hope others in addition to myself have the time and interest to brose and research this material. More specialist searching may reveal even more. It looks very promising. There may be valuable theories to explain Bush's messianic and destructive behaviour as he leads the world toward the brink. Good hunting.

I repeat this quote from Adolph Hitler because it seems so relevant to the tactics today of the Bush Administration. The reactions of people are much the same. It's as if nothing was learned since the Hitlerian techniques were successfully used on the German people. Why?  They may be fooled again, particularly if Bush and co unleash a 'False Flag' op, followed up with a well-planned campaign of lies, blame, pro-war propaganda and war on the accused, for the phoney alleged "False Flag" errorist attack on the US.

Tens of millions of Americans want President George W. Bush to be impeached for the lies and deceit he used to launch an illegal war and for violating his oath of office to uphold the US Constitution. Millions of other Americans want Bush turned over to the war crimes tribunal at the Hague . The true fate that awaits Bush is psychiatric incarceration.

"False Flag Operation?" Dr Carmichael quotes Ray McGovern (below) as predicting the US will use a covert terrorist act on the US (otherwise known as 'False Flag' operation) and blame Iran, in order to condition the US population to sanction any response George Bush chooses against Iran. ....The U.S. Democrats who have just won in Congress and the Senate are unlikely to stop this war as they are deeply involved in approving the Iraq war, and either repeating or not questioning Bush lies to justify it. In mid 1970s the American Power Elite drew a “Grand Plan” to control and to monopolize global oil and nuclear energy resources, for he who controls energy resources determines the fate of nations. The base of this “Grand Plan” is the invasion of energy rich countries to directly control their resources, and to create subservient governments that would exploit their own people as cheap labor to harvest energy for the United States.
The collapse of the Soviet Union had created a window of opportunity for the United States to ensure and to affirm its global superiority through expansion and controlling energy resources without any real opposition. The attacks of 911 were necessary requirements for the Bush administration to wage a “global war against terror” that would serve as a cover up for American hegemony. President Bush borrowed Mussolini's fascist motto of “If you are not with me, you are against me” and turned it into “You are either with us or with the terrorist” to terrorize weaker nations into accepting American expansions.

People have been conditioned to hate and fear Iran and believe lies that support and deepen that hate. Proofs to the contrary are simply dismissed as pro-Iranian or pro-terrorist propaganda.

Bush Signs New Policy Edict Calling For U.S. Control of Space:

The World is Not Enough, So Now U.S. Intends To Usurp Space
After US President George W. Bush signed away more basic human rights through his draconian Military Commissions Act Of 2006, he moved on this week to signing another unbelievable law: this time claiming outer space for the US, to be enforced by a new military service, the "U.S. Space Forces." And once again, his notion of US "diplomacy" is to order other nations to support this hegemonic US policy, or else.

. . . For example they could;
1.  accept an offer of enriched uranium from another source, to allay the false and groundless suspicions the U.S. has engendered in the world community.
2. They could offer to allow more inspections of Iran by the international community, in order to show that everything Iran had said was true.
3. Another even more dramatic policy step would be for Iran to announce it will officially recognise the reality of Israel's continued existence and will work with all nations to make a peaceful, secure middle east etc.

Does Bush Think War with Iran Is Preordained?

The aircraft carrier Eisenhower, accompanied by the guided-missile cruiser USS Anzio, guided-missile destroyer USS Ramage, guided-missile destroyer USS Mason and the fast-attack submarine USS Newport News, is, as I write, making its way to the Straits of Hormuz off Iran. The ships will be in place to strike Iran by the end of the month. It may be a bluff. It may be a feint. It may be a simple show of American power. But I doubt it.

It took 6 years of relentless threats, sanctions and belligerence, but Bush finally succeeded in pushing Kim Jong-Il to build North Korea's first nuclear bomb. Now, Kim can just add a few finishing touches to his ballistic-missile delivery system, the Taepo-dong ICBM, and he'll be able to wipe out the 9 western states with a flip of the switch.

Wars and propaganda machines

Propaganda machines are dangerous, even more so in a democracy than in a totalitarian regime, because their goal is to confuse, disinform, lie, raise fear and manipulate the opinions of the people.

Ex-U.S. Senator Gary   Hart claims Bush will launch "a preemptive war against Iran " this month before the November Congressional elections in the U.S.
The present predictions are that the Democrats would win enough seats to take control of the House, thus upsetting the Republican majority and perhaps preventing the more extreme war plans of the Bush Administration. The Bush neoconservative regime is determined to prevent that and reverse public opinion so that the Republicans will retain control. 
Will the Bush Administration rely only on lies and false propaganda, as Gary Hart's article implies, to justify preemptive war against Iran?
Or will Bush stage a 'False Flag' so-called 'terrorist attack' on the U.S. and blame Iran , in order to justify the use of nuclear weapons?

The October Surprise

It should come as no surprise if the Bush Administration undertakes a preemptive war against Iran sometime before the November election.
Were these more normal times, this would be a stunning possibility, quickly dismissed by thoughtful people as dangerous, unprovoked, and out of keeping with our national character. But we do not live in normal times.
And we do not have a government much concerned with our national character. If anything, our current Administration is out to remake our national character into something it has never been.

Here is a dire warning from one of the best commentators on US policy, that Bush will nuclear bomb Iran. Read it and draw your own conclusions. If you agree the situation is extremely dangerous, then please forward it as widely as possible.

Why Bush Will Nuke Iran

The neoconservative Bush administration will attack Iran with tactical nuclear weapons, because it is the only way the neocons believe they can rescue their goal of US (and Israeli) hegemony in the Middle East.
The US has lost the war in Iraq and in Afghanistan. Generals in both war theaters are stating their need for more troops. But there are no troops to send.

According to Seymour Hersh, Bush has a messianic mission - making war on Iran. The pretext, as we learned from Bush's war on Iraq, is that his neocon administration creates it's own pretexts for war, by stringing together a fabric of lies, and demonizing the leader of the target nation.
Even if Iran had or was planning to make nuclear weapons, that does not give Bush & Co the right to wage pre-emptive war against it. Does the U.S. make war on Israel, because Israel has an arsenal of 200-500 nuclear weapons?. It does not, nor does it make war or threaten sanctions against any of the other nuclear weapon states -Russia, China, Britain, France, Pakistan, North Korea, India. So why would Bush risk starting a major war in the Middle East - even a nuclear war -  that could escalate and end the world?.

Hersh: U.S. mulls nuclear option for Iran

HERSH: The word I hear is "messianic." He thinks, as I wrote, that he's the only one now who will have the courage to do it. He's politically free. I don't think he's overwhelmingly concerned about the '06 elections, congressional elections. I think he really thinks he has a chance, and this is going to be his mission.

In New Zealand we certainly live in a 'Bubble of ignorance' generated by our mass media. If it wasn't for Internet, New Zealand would indeed be embedded in ignorance about world affairs - particularly what's going on in Washington. I Googled "When Nuclear strike On Iran" and got 6,150,000 entries. There is a lot of authoritative articles predicting a nuclear strike on Iran. If you doubt the Neo Conservative Bush regime would do such a thing - because they well know Iran has no nuclear weapons or nuclear weapons programme as reported by IAEA inspectors, even though they are screaming the opposite - try doing a Google yourself and read a few of these articles.  Here is one good example. Mutually Assured Dementia

Maybe it's just me, but I've been at least a little bit surprised by the relatively muted reaction to the news that the Cheney Administration and its Pentagon underlings are racing to put the finishing touches on plans for attacking Iran – plans which may include the first wartime use of nuclear weapons since Nagasaki.

Bush is not fighting a global war on terrorism in Iraq or anywhere else. There was no terrorism in Iraq until Bush provoked the resistance to invasion and American barbarism. He calls such resistance "terrorism" for his own political purposes. His wars and policies and statements make far more resistance to American aggression or "terrorism" as he likes to call it, than it defeats. His so-called "war on terrorism" in Iraq is not a war - particularly after he quickly defeated the puny forces of Saddam Hussein. It has always been an illegal invasion and massacre of civilians, based on many whopping big lies. His tactics don't kill terrorists, it makes them.

Bush's Terror Tales

There is something sad about a grown man playing children's make-believe war games in a tree-house in grandpa's back yard?which is how George W. Bush came across Thursday night in his  speech on the importance of winning the war in Iraq in the global battle against terrorism. Rarely does a leader of a great country like the United States malign history, his people's intelligence and the dignity of over a billion Muslims in one speech. But Bush did that Thursday night and will probably keep doing it for a while.

Extreme Christian Fundamentalists and Christian Zionists are working, wishing, and praying for Armageddon as indicated in Sarah Posner's article below. They are making an impact on U.S. policy and calling for a U.S.- Israeli war on Iran to speed the process of warmaking, and ultimately, the Biblically prophesied Armageddon. The true believers are not worried but look forward to Armageddon, as they believe they will be 'raptured' directly to heaven while the unbelieving rest of humanity suffer the fires of hell for eternity.
The tendency of most normal rational people and the majority of Christians is to laugh and dismiss such obvious insanity.
However Bush admits to being a 'born again' fundamentalist Christian who consults with, and gets messages from God.

In a perfect world, a reporter at last week's press conference with George Bush and Tony Blair would have asked Bush, in the presence of his principal European ally, if he believes the European Union is the Antichrist.
Although it sounds like the kind of Pat Robertson lunacy that makes even the wingnuts run for the nearest exit, it's a question Bush should be forced to answer. Bush and other leading Republicans have lined up behind a growing movement of Christian Zionists for whom a European Antichrist figures prominently in an end-times scenario.

This article examines and helps explain the pathology of Israeli irrational and brutal behaviour toward Lebanon and Palestine.
Many Israeli intelligentsia are making a similar diagnosis of Israeli society. With some 200 to 500 nuclear weapons and U.S. support Israel thinks it is invulnerable. It believes it can bomb the UN and ignore UN resolutions. It makes excuses to justify grossly disproportionate aggression and expansion.. It doesn't want independent UN witnesses in Lebanon. Israeli extremism matches that of the Bush Administration. That's one reason Bush's U.S. supports and funds anything Israel does.

As we witness the unfolding spectacle of ferocious, indiscriminate violence, destruction, and brutality in Gaza and Lebanon, it's difficult to resist the conclusion that there is something terribly wrong with the Israeli state and society. It's as though all moral and psychological constraints and boundaries have been breached, deviancy normalized. Not that state terrorism, deliberate aggression, extreme disproportionate force, and massive violations of international humanitarian law are new to the Israeli state: from 1948, the list is long, the evidence widely available.
