As there were to be no "body bags" (or cameras to film them as the dead came home), as there were to be no "body counts" ("We have made a conscious effort not to be a body-count team" was the way the President put it ), as there were to be no "quagmires," nor the need to search for that "light at the end of the tunnel," so, surely, there were to be no "escalations."

Pre-Trial Continues for Priests Who Denounce Torture

Two Roman Catholic priests, who were arrested as they approached the Fort Huachuca gatehouse on November 19, 2006, will face a continuance of their pre-trial hearing this August 13 in Federal Court in Tucson, Arizona. The intent of Franciscan Fr. Louis Vitale, 74, and Jesuit Fr. Steve Kelly, 58, was to speak with enlisted personnel and deliver a letter denouncing torture to Major General Barbara Fast, commander at the post. The letter addressed to Major General Fast voices the priests' concern with what is being taught to interrogators who are being trained at Fort Huachuca, the headquarters for the intelligence services of the US military.

Hillary, Hiroshima and US Hubris

Justifying Mass Murder

The anniversary of the U.S. bombing of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is, perhaps, a good time to note that arguments rationalizing and even valorizing the use of nuclear weapons, once considered beyond the pale, are now back in fashion. Here we have yet more evidence of the Bizarro Effect , which, ever since 9/11, has stood everything – especially our traditional concept of morality – on its head, not only repealing the laws of logic and common sense but also ensconcing evil in the place of good.

US Capitalist System Spins Out of Control

The US capitalist system is a sacred religion, a dogma that cannot be questioned, but is out of control and leading to global environmental destruction as Sullivan illustrates. However its offspring - the military-industrial-political complex - is also out of control, breeding wars and new arms races which threaten to destroy the world in the nearer future. The economic system and values of global humanity keep accelerating this self-destructive system. Increasingly the bulk of human resources go into preparing for, and fighting, endless wars based on lies and myths.

Why do we sell them our souls?

It is painfully obvious that America is a land that worships the market economy. Big money is God here. Big money is all powerful, omnipotent. All solutions, as perceived by the captains of business, therefore, must be market based. Moreover, in the moribund perceptions of the ruling elite, the market must be totally unfettered. It must exist beyond the pale of conscience, bearing no responsibility to the people, or to the earth that sustains it. It must answer only to the bottom line and reject all other input—a function that it has executed only too well.

Anti-War Demonstration

This may be one of the most important anti-war demonstrations to be held against Bush's illegal war on Iraq and should be supported by all who wish an end to the war. The long-term estimates of some 2 Trillion dollars for the war should be compared to the US Civil Engineers estimate of some 1.6 trillion to repair the aging US infrastructure. Also many social welfare programmes in the US are now being starved of funds.  However to the Bush regime, inventing excuses to wage wars for empire and to feed the US military-industrial complex is likely to take priority. Demonstrations are needed for many reasons, but Bush has shown he will continue to make war whatever the cost and no matter what the criticism. Perpetual war is Bush's answer. This, endless profits and religious delusional are the sacred morality of the Bush regime. I doubt if demonstrations can do it. Impeachment may be the only sure way to stop a nuclear madman. 

Money for Bridges and Cities, NOT War! Sept. 29 in DC

On October 1, Congress is scheduled to authorize over $100 billion for continued war in Iraq, and estimates for the long term costs of the war are over $2 trillion. Already more than $500 billion has been spent. 
"The American Society of Civil Engineers estimates that the USA needs to spend $1.6 trillion over five years to put its infrastructure — which includes some 590,000 bridges — in good condition."

Arctic Resource Wars?

In staking a claim to a large part of Arctic oil and gas reserves, Russia has fired the first shot of what may become known as Arctic Resource Wars.
The Bush Empire, willing to invent lies to justify killing for oil in the Middle East , will also pursue this new resource. Obviously a peaceful solution to opposing claims would be in the interests of all nations. But given US imperial war policies and the value of perpetual wars to the US economy and military-industrial complex, this will be viewed as an opportunity to expand the new US-Russia cold war and new nuclear arms race. That is the likely choice, rather than exploring the options for a peaceful solution.

Russian sub makes claim to resource-rich North Pole

Russian explorers dived deep below the North Pole in a submersible and planted a national flag on the seabed to stake a symbolic claim to the energy riches of the Arctic.
A mechanical arm dropped a specially made rust-proof titanium flag on to the Arctic seabed at a depth of 4261 metres under the surface, Itar-Tass news agency quoted expedition officials as saying.
Russia wants to extend right up to the North Pole the territory it controls in the Arctic, believed to hold vast reserves of untapped oil and natural gas.
